Ethiopia’s largest airline will resume scheduled flights to the formerly contested Tigray region from Wednesday.
“We are delighted to be able to resume our flights to Mekelle. The resumption of these flights allows families to be reunited, commercial activities to resume, stimulates tourism and offers many other opportunities that benefit society,” said airline CEO Mesfin Tasew.
For two years, the region was largely cut off from the rest of the world. The Ethiopian government shut down telecommunications, banking, electricity and air transport in Tigray after the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) held regional elections in the northern part of the region despite a ban from Addis Ababa. According to the UN, several hundred thousand people have died in the fighting since November 2020.
In November of this year, however, the Ethiopian government signed a peace agreement with the TPLF. On Tuesday, a delegation from the Ethiopian government flew to the provincial capital, Mek’ele, to further advance the peace process.
