Lufthansa is launching a new group airline under the name City Airlines GmbH. This is the project previously known as Cityline II. Actually, this should be finished, but behind the scenes the work was pushed further.
The youngest Kranich offshoot now also has its own website. The new carrier is scheduled to start up in mid-2023 and will serve “major European cities and remote regions” for Lufthansa under the leadership of Cityline. The fleet is to be composed of medium-haul jets from the manufacturer Airbus, which are already in use with other crane airlines.
According to reports, the recruitment of employees has already begun. Officially, flying positions should not be advertised until summer 2023. There is a good reason for this, because at the moment there is a so-called peace obligation with regard to collective bargaining with the Cockpit Association. After the deadline, Lufthansa obviously wants to start up City Airlines, which is supposed to operate feeder flights.
The company was founded in the summer of 2022. It was originally known in the industry as « Cityline II ». The business model should be almost identical to that of the sister company mentioned. Obviously, synergies should also be used. On the homepage of the new company you can read, among other things: “We are expanding the European route network in the Lufthansa Group and will take you to your destination with our modern and economical Airbus fleet.
