Ryanair published on Monday, January 13, 2025, details of the costs incurred in connection with an incident involving a disruptive passenger. On April 9, 2024, a flight from Dublin to Lanzarote was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Porto. The passenger was arrested after landing. The airline had to accommodate 160 passengers and crew in Porto overnight and provide the replacement aircraft, which cost a total of over 15,000 euros.
According to Ryanair, expenses include additional fuel costs, accommodation, meals, airport and handling fees and legal fees. The airline announced that it would file a civil lawsuit in the Irish courts to recover these costs from the person responsible. Ryanair also criticized the European authorities’ inaction in dealing with disruptive passengers who endanger safety.
The incident has reignited the debate about alcohol consumption at airports. Ryanair is calling for a limit on the sale of alcoholic drinks to a maximum of two per passenger using the boarding pass. The airline points out that measures have already been taken to limit alcohol consumption on board, while there are still no binding regulations at airports.
The airline emphasizes that such incidents not only incur high costs, but also impact the safety and travel experience of passengers and crew. If an appeal is lodged against the EU authorities, uniform regulations should be created for the sale of alcohol and for punishing disruptive behavior.
